Female Pedestrian Seriously Injured in Portland Hit-and-Run Accident

Tags: , , ,

Car accidents are among the most dangerous types of accidents, and unfortunately, one of the most frequently occurring in Portland, Oregon. Any accident attorney in Portland can tell you that motor vehicle collisions can have drastic consequences for all parties involved, whether the incident was a single or multi-vehicle crash. Victims may sustain a number of life-threatening injuries, from fractures to internal hemorrhaging to permanent brain damage.

Yet, as catastrophic as some car accident injuries can be, the severity of injuries that can be suffered exponentially increases when the victim is a pedestrian. Without the added protection that a vehicle can provide, including airbags, there is nothing to shield a pedestrian from the full force of the impact. And with many drivers going well above the speed limit when the accident occurs, there is often little hope that a pedestrian accident victim will survive.

Unfortunately, the tragic effects of a pedestrian crash were felt throughout Portland earlier this month when a 60-year-old woman was critically injured after being hit by a passenger vehicle. To make matters worse, the driver fled the scene of the accident before emergency crews even arrived.

According to news reports, the collision occurred around 10PM on July 4 in Southeast Portland. The suspect was allegedly driving a small to mid-sized vehicle and was last seen heading westbound on Holgate Boulevard, but it is unclear as to whether the driver was eventually apprehended.

When police and paramedics arrived at the scene, they rushed the victim to a local hospital to obtain treatment for traumatic and potentially life-threatening injuries. Authorities did not release her identity in the immediate wake of the accident. As of July 5, the victim was still receiving treatment at the hospital.

At this point, the victim and her loved ones may want to consider speaking with an accident attorney, specifically an experienced Portland pedestrian accident lawyer, to discuss their rights and options in filing a personal injury case. When injuries are suffered as a result of someone’s negligence, victims may be eligible to obtain compensation. The fact that this particular incident involved not only a pedestrian accident, but a hit-and-run that resulted in bodily injury, could significantly affect the victim’s case in her and her family’s favor.

Sadly, this is but one of many hit-and-run personal injury accidents that take place throughout Portland and the United States as a whole. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that the number of fatal hit-and-run crashes is increasing across the nation, with pedestrians accounting for roughly 60% of fatalities. Alcohol is often responsible for these crashes.

The pedestrian accident fatality rate is particularly high in Portland. The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) reports that in the past five years, pedestrians constituted a third of all traffic fatalities, which is more than double the national average.
